Servers and network looked after

Who last logged in to your server, and what did they do there?

Nobody remembers. The server sits in a storeroom behind the boxes. Its updates were installed the day it was set up. Less than ten per cent of disk space is left. Everything works — right up to the morning when nothing does.

You hear about the breakdown from us

The server stops being the thing you only remember on the day it fails. Every day we watch it and the network: disk space, temperature, errors, links, login attempts. The alert comes to us, not to you, and an engineer deals with it.

Updates go in when you say so, not when the system decides to reboot in the middle of the working day. Equipment settings are saved, so we replace a burnt-out switch in an hour, not in a day.

Every quarter you get a review: what is ageing, what is running out and what to fix first.

Questions

We have one server. Is this not for bigger companies?

No. The per-server rate is the same for one server and for ten. A six-person company with one server running the accounting programme is the usual case: that server holds the thing work stops without first.

Do you count physical servers, or virtual ones too?

We count a running server, not a metal box. Three virtual machines on one piece of hardware are three servers, because each one has to be updated, fixed and watched. One machine without virtualisation is one server.

Is network hardware charged separately?

No. The office firewall, switches and access points are part of server care and never appear as a separate line on the invoice. Only new hardware and installation are charged separately: that is a project, and you see the quote before work starts.

What happens when the server goes down at night?

The alert comes to us, and an engineer deals with it. If the work can be restored remotely, we do it before morning; if someone has to come out, you hear it from us, not from staff who turned up and could not start.
