What happens to a server when the updates stop?
That day, nothing. It simply stops getting patches, and the first hole anyone finds stays in it for good. Then your insurer sees it at renewal and your client sees it in their questionnaire — and a technical question turns into a money question.
A migration with a date on it
You get a schedule with dates: what moves, when, and how long work will be down. It grows out of the inventory — which servers and databases run, which applications live on them, and who breaks if you stop them.
Then we move them one at a time. The new server comes up alongside, the data moves, the applications are tested on it before the switch, and only then does the old one go out of service. You can go back at every step, until you say all is well.
By the end-of-support date, not one machine is left without cover.

Questions
Which dates apply to us?
SQL Server 2016 stopped getting updates on 14 July 2026. Extended updates for Windows Server 2012 end on 13 October 2026, and ordinary support for Windows Server 2016 ends in January 2027. The inventory shows which of these you have.
Our application only runs on the old version. What now?
That comes out at the inventory, not on the night of the migration. Then there are two ways: upgrade the application along with the server, or leave it on a separate machine cut off from the network and name a date by which you replace it. Both are costed in the plan.
How long will the company be unable to work?
As long as the switch takes: usually half an hour to two hours per machine, in the evening or at the weekend. The new server is already up and tested by then, so the migration is a switch, not a build on the fly.
We have decided to start. Where do you begin?
With the inventory. You need it as much as we do: without it the timing and the price of the migration are a guess. Out of it you get a dated schedule and a figure, and only then do you decide whether to move everything at once or in parts. The price per server is known up front, the total after the inventory.
