# Backups that are tested

A backup that has been restored, not just taken.

## When did you last pull a file out of a backup?

Probably never. The backup runs on schedule, the tick is green, the email arrives every morning. What is inside it, and whether it will come back, nobody has checked. You find that out on the exact day the data is gone everywhere else.

## You know your time back to work in advance

Once a year you get an exact number: that is how long your company will take to get back to work after a failure. We restore for real — we stand up the server, open the database, check mail and files — and we time it with a stopwatch.

You are left with a document: the date, what the data was, the measured time. Your insurer asks for it at renewal and your client asks for it in their security questionnaire. “We take backups” is not accepted there, and no one writes such a paper after the fact.

Whatever fails to come back shows up during the test. We fix it before the next one, not on the day the data is gone.

### Our backups are already set up. Why pay again?

A backup that is set up and a backup that comes back are two different things. We test the second one: we stand up the server, open the database, time it. Your backup schedule stays as it is, and we do not touch the contractor who runs it.

### Why is the price per year and not per month?

Because you are buying the test, not the storage. It happens once a year, takes twelve hours of work and ends with a dated report. We do not bill a monthly line for copying: storage goes at the vendor's invoice.

### Why do you need a written report?

Because outsiders ask for it. Your insurer at cyber policy renewal and your client in a security questionnaire want a dated document with a measured time, not the words “we take backups”. Such a document cannot be written after the fact.

### What if the data does not come back during the test?

That is exactly the result you are paying for. We write down what did not come back and why, and we fix it before the next test. Learning this on a test costs twelve hours of work. Learning it in a real failure costs the whole company weeks of downtime.
