# Accessibility deadlines for your site

Two rules and a plan to meet them.

## Who is responsible for the site working for a blind visitor?

The contractor who built the site four years ago and no longer answers. The PDFs are posted by a secretary, the videos by the press office, the forms live in someone else's service. Not one of their contracts has the word “accessibility” in it — and the deadline is on you.

## A plan that fits the deadline

You get a queue of work with dates on it. First the count: how many pages, templates, forms and documents you have, and which of them fall under the rule. Then the order: what gets fixed in a template and closes hundreds of pages at once, and what has to be corrected by hand.

What is done once we keep apart from what is done for ever: your contractor fixes the templates and the buttons, and you post the documents and the videos. So your people need a short set of instructions and some training — otherwise the site falls apart again within a quarter.

Procurement is a line of its own: the forms service, the CRM and the video service all arrive with a promise of accessibility that almost nobody checks before signing.

### Where do these dates come from?

From two rules. Under ADA Title II the deadlines are set by the Department of Justice rule (28 CFR Part 35, Subpart H): 26 April 2027 and 26 April 2028. Under Section 504 the Department of Health rule gives 11 May 2027 and 11 May 2028. The standard in both is the same — WCAG 2.1 AA.

### We have a thousand pages. Audit all of them?

No. The audit goes by templates and page types: one fix in a template closes hundreds of addresses. Forms, tables, documents and anything built around the template are checked by hand. The quote counts the pages and screens checked, not the addresses.

### Will an accessibility widget settle it?

No. An overlay on top of the site does not fix the code of the pages, and the law requires the site itself to meet the rules. A widget lifts neither a complaint nor an order — and it is the first thing an inspection looks at.

### What about the documents that get posted every day?

Train the people who post them. Training for the people who fill the site costs from $175 per hour; after it the new files stop adding violations, and the old ones are fixed in turn — $5.60–$6.30 per document page.
